Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • In an emergency, it is critical that Canadians have easy access to emergency services such as 9-1-1;
  • Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) technologies allow people to send text, picture, and video messages to 9-1-1 operators, and allow operators to transfer calls to other regions;
  • Presently, the Province of Nova Scotia, the City of Ottawa, the City of Waterloo, and the City of Calgary are the few locations in Canada that have the capabilities of transferring 9-1-1 calls elsewhere; and
  • The CRTC aims to have call transferring in place nationwide in March 2025, and the ability to text 9-1-1 implemented across Canada in 2026.
We, the undersigned, Citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to work with the CRTC as well as provincial, territorial, and municipal governments to more rapidly implement NG9-1-1 technology allowing 9-1-1 calls to be transferred across Canada and allow all Canadians to send text, picture, and video messages to operators.
