Petition to the Prime Minister
- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has no independent oversight mechanism to ensure conformity;
- The decisions made by the CBSA have a profound impact on the lives of its clients and employees;
- The public confidence in the CBSA can only be assured if an independent mechanism can ensure it accurately applies federal rules and regulations aligned with the values of the government in a fair, respectful and transparent manner;
- Bill C-3, An Act to amend the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Act and the Canada Border Services Agency Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, presented during the first session of the 43rd Parliament, introduced a Public Complaints and Review Commission and amended the CBSA Act to grant the commission the power to conduct a review of CBSA activities and to investigate complaints concerning the conduct of any of that agency’s employees; and
- In doing so, the bill created an independent review agency for the CBSA to ensure accurate application of legislation, policies and regulations while promoting accountability and integrity.
