Petition to the House of Commons
- The Canadian Food and Inspection Agency released the new rules around the transport of farm animals on their way to slaughter in February 2019;
- These new rules remain severely inadequate at reducing the suffering these animals must endure;
- We propose the following changes:
- 1. Mandatory temperature controlled trucks to reduce exposure to extreme cold and heat;
- 2. Animals are not to be overcrowded (ie. all pigs must at least be allowed to lie down and stand up in their natural position); and
- 3. Decrease travel times without food or rest to 8 hours for chickens, 24 hours for horses, 12 hours for pigs and 24 hours for cattle;
- These changes would reduce overall suffering and the number of deaths that occur before these animals reach the slaughter house; and
- The least we can do for these animals that are going to end up on our plates, is to make their last hours as comfortable and as painless as possible.
