Petition to the Minister of Health
- The cost of insulin and an insulin pump can present significant economic hardships for uninsured individuals;
- The World Health Organization includes insulins and other medicines for diabetes in the Model Lists of Essential Medicines;
- Preventative measures can most effectively be taken with the insulin pump to reduce the chances of experiencing diabetic complications such as: kidney failure, nerve loss and limb loss, diabetic retinopathy as well as other complications;
- Coverage for insulin pumps varies from province to province based on age;
- Age should not be a factor in determining coverage;
- Individuals who have been using an insulin pump for the majority of their life will be forced to switch to multiple daily injections if they cannot afford an insulin pump.
