Petition to the Government of Canada
- Public transit makes important contributions to the environment, greenhouse gas reductions and air quality, healthy lifestyles, and economic development;
- The public transit tax credit is a way to recognize and encourage people to choose an environmentally friendly mode of transportation that does not cause congestion in urban spaces;
- This tax credit is a fair incentive to use public transit because it is based on personal income. In some regions, users can sometimes save the equivalent of two monthly passes per year;
- The public transit tax credit benefits seniors, families, students and the middle class; and
- The Government of Canada committed to reducing the tax burden on the middle class and the Prime Minister of Canada said, “We were elected on a promise to reduce taxes for the middle class.”
