Petition to the Government of Canada
- On April 5, 2017, motion M-105 was passed, which calls upon the government to increase funding for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research and to substantially increase national efforts to develop and launch a comprehensive strategy to assist with the eradication of ALS at the earliest opportunity;
- Currently in Canada, 3,000 Canadians are diagnosed with ALS;
- Every year, 1,000 of those Canadians will die from ALS, including the tragic loss of the Honourable Mauril Bélanger, former MP for Ottawa—Vanier, on August 16, 2016;
- In that same year another 1,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with ALS;
- Currently the Government of Canada gives $0 directly to ALS research; and
- ALS is not an incurable disease, it's just grossly underfunded.
