Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled

Whereas:
  • Anti-Palestinian racism is on the rise and is often ignored. Distinct from Islamophobia, Anti-Palestinian racism silences and dehumanizes Palestinians, thereby upholding the settler-colonial narrative. Conflating APR with Islamophobia denies the distinct racism faced by Palestinians and suggests the struggle is between religions, rather than a struggle against colonialism;
  • If APR is not recognized and addressed, it will continue to be viewed as acceptable and the dehumanization and discrimination against Palestinians and their advocates will continue unabated; and
  • The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s Working Definition of Antisemitism (IHRA-WDA) is problematic, vague, and its appended examples conflate antisemitism with criticism of Israel to discredit and suppress legitimate criticism of Israel’s policies. Over a thousand scholars, civil-society organizations and Jewish groups caution against or downright reject it.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to recognize and combat Anti-Palestinian racism, namely:
1. Include Anti-Palestinian racism in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights’ study of antisemitism and Islamophobia currently underway;
2. Support provinces in adding the Nakba to public school curricula, as proposed in British Columbia, in keeping with the principles of Truth and Reconciliation; and
3. Reject the imposition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s Working Definition of Antisemitism framework on Canadian campuses and public institutions, as urged by Independent Jewish Voices Canada, and instead adopt an alternative definition of antisemitism that does not conflate it with criticism of the Israeli state (e.g., Jerusalem Declaration).
