Petition to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food
- It is completely legal to confine a chicken in a cage for its entire life;
- Chickens in Canada's egg industry are given practically no rights;
- It is not necessary to provide a chicken with room to roam freely;
- Chickens are sentient beings and have the ability to think and feel pain; and
- The Egg Farmers of Canada have committed to phasing out battery cages by 2036 while still allowing enriched cages. This is not nearly a good enough initiative to provide egg-laying hens with appropriate welfare. Not only will these chickens be tortured for another 20 years in battery cages, but they will continue to be tortured in enriched cages after 2036.
