Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled
- Since January 2011, Tunisia has been moving confidently toward democracy and seems to be succeeding, as its new constitution demonstrates. However, its economic challenges are real and are making the democratic transition difficult. The youth unemployment rate is very high, a large portion of the country (the south, inland regions) continues to be economically marginalized and security threats are hurting tourism and the entire economy. Given these serious problems, Tunisia’s efforts may fail. It needs help; and
- Tunisia needs Canada’s support on the economic front, particularly in its marginalized regions, in order to sustain its democratic transition. The current priorities are fighting terrorism, combatting corruption and fostering balanced economic development that creates jobs.
