Petition to the Prime Minister

Whereas:
  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is in the grips of deadly conflicts in the eastern part of the country, driven by armed groups such as M23, which are causing tremendous suffering to the civilian population through acts such as rapes and massacres, and these conflicts have already cost over 8 million lives;
  • Canada has regularly condemned aggression around the world, as in Syria and Ukraine, by imposing sanctions on oppressors while providing financial support to victims, demonstrating its commitment to protecting innocent people and its leadership in finding peaceful solutions;
  • Canada is known as a champion of human rights and a promoter of universal peace; and
  • One cannot stay neutral in the face of injustice, because remaining silent about the oppression of a people is taking the side of the oppressor.
We, the undersigned, residents of Canada and members of the Congolese community of Canada who care about justice and human rights around the world, call upon the Prime Minister to:
1. Apply diplomatic pressure on those involved in the violence in eastern Congo by condemning and sanctioning those who violate peace agreements, as has been done for the Russia–Ukraine conflict, in order to promote peaceful solutions and end the ongoing bloodbath;
2. Provide greater humanitarian support, including financial and logistical support, to meet the urgent needs of the civilian populations affected by the conflicts in the DRC; and
3. Implement a special immigration program for Congolese civilians affected by the war, giving them a safe path to rebuilding their lives in Canada, far from the conflicts and violence.
