e-4866 (Media and telecommunications)
Original language of petition: French
Petition to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry
- Since public services have gone paperless, access to telecommunications has become an essential service;
- Canada’s population density is comparable to that of Australia, yet our telecommunications costs continue to be seven times more expensive;
- The market is 89% owned by three companies;
- Since 2015, $7.6 billion from the federal government in addition to billions from the provinces have been invested in the infrastructure of these private companies;
- Given inflation, some people have to go into debt to keep their communications;
- Telecommunications access equipment is expensive and quickly becomes outdated; and
- Access to public networks is not secure and is therefore not a viable option for the public.
