Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Section 2b of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms grants everyone, “the freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication” and section 2c grants everyone, “the freedom of peaceful assembly”;
  • There is currently no process in place to address the concerns of peaceful assemblies;
  • Without a process for peaceful assemblies, they can become disruptive to society and frustrating to protestors, who feel their concerns are not being heard or addressed; and
  • Dialogue is presumed to be the fastest way to peacefully resolve issues.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to enact legislation that will trigger negotiations, within seven days of a qualifying protest, between organizers of a protest and applicable designated government representatives if the following criteria are met by the protesting group:
(i) Protesters are registered (option to remain anonymous),
(ii) The number of protesters meets a specified threshold (percentage of the voting population),
(iii) Protest(s) occur (s) in designated protest areas throughout the country,
(iv) The protest is conducted without violence or destruction of property,
(v) The protesting group has clear grievances that need to be addressed by the government in power.
