Petition to the Government of Canada
- Gender equity and the removal of barriers to the full participation of women in the workforce are stated priorities of the federal government;
- Numerous municipal jurisdictions from coast to coast have implemented policies or pilot projects to put menstrual supplies in school and community restrooms;
- Research reveals that poor access to menstrual supplies on post-secondary campuses leads to student absence, poor performance in class, missed extra-curricular activities and heightened student anxiety;
- Menstruation is a normal, healthy, unpredictable bodily function that needs to be managed immediately in the restroom;
- The relatively low cost to provide menstrual supplies in workplace restrooms will be offset by increased attendance, reduced workplace stress and improved performance of women at work; and
- Canada Occupational Health and Safety Code and the National Building Code regulate restrooms outside the home and currently specify toilet paper, soap, wash water, hand drying facilities, and urinals, the last clearly providing accommodation for men's convenience.
