Petition to the Minister of Foreign Affairs
- Nicaragua is under political violence and repression by Daniel Ortega's regime;
- The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) visit in May of 2018 provided testimonials, audiovisual and documented evidence of human rights violations during peaceful protests;
- The IACHR documented patterns of massive and arbitrary arrests that occurred especially during the first days of the protests;
- The IACHR visited different hospitals in Nicaragua and also interviewed several volunteer doctors who reported a pattern of gunshot wounds on injured and deceased protesters;
- Amnesty International attended the Mother’s day march on May 30, 2018, and witnessed the chaos and violence caused by riot police who open fired on protesters, killing15 protesters and injuring 199;
- Amnesty International verifies that the attacks against demonstrators were led by police and pro-government armed groups;
- Amnesty International denounces the lethal policy of state repression and demands that the regime of Daniel Ortega put an immediate end to the violence;
- There are more than 131 deaths recorded, mostly university students requesting Ortega's resignation; and
- As concerned citizens we remain optimistic that the Canadian government will be a key player in restoring democracy and peace in Nicaragua.
