Petition to the House of Commons

We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House of Commons to the following:

Whereas:

  • The NDP-Liberal government has claimed to support Ukraine, it has been extremely slow to deliver concrete military assistance to the front line;
  • The government has previously rejected Conservative proposals that would have expedited the delivery of urgently needed military equipment to Ukraine.

Therefore, we, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:

  • Immediately follow through on long-delayed promises regarding military support for Ukraine;
  • Send any surplus military equipment to Ukraine on an urgent basis; and
  • Support the passage of the Boosting Ukraine's Munitions Supply Act.

Response by the Minister of National Defence

Signed by (Minister or Parliamentary Secretary): Marie-France Lalonde

As of July 11, 2024

The Government of Canada remains committed to Ukraine and is continually evaluating options to provide Ukraine with the comprehensive military assistance needed to defend its sovereignty and security.

Since the beginning of 2022, National Defence has committed $4.5 billion in military equipment requested by Ukraine, including armoured vehicles, heavy artillery, body armour, gas masks, helmets, drone cameras, high-resolution satellite imagery, anti-armour weapons systems, rocket launchers, small arms and ammunition, as well as other highly specialized pieces of military equipment.

Recently, Canada committed an additional $500 million to support the costs of military equipment, assistance, and training for Ukraine’s Armed Forces, help rebuild the Ukrainian security and defence sector and advance Ukraine’s transition toward full interoperability with NATO. In addition, Canada allocated up to $389 million to enhance F-16 pilot training through the Ukraine Defense Contact Group Air Force Capability Coalition. It has also signed the Ukraine Compact, a joint statement with G7 countries and partners, that reconfirms enduring support for Ukraine’s self-defence and deterrence capabilities.

Finally, as announced by the Minister of National Defence during the 23rd Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) meeting, Canada plans to send an initial tranche of over 2000 CRV7 rocket motors to Ukraine. National Defence will also donate 29 Canadian manufactured Nanuk Remote Weapons System from surplus CAF inventory and will send more than 130,000 rounds of surplus small arms ammunition to Ukraine.

Canada will continue to work closely with its Partners and Allies to provide Ukraine with the military assistance it needs as it fights against Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion. The Minister of National Defence remains in close contact with Ukraine’s Minister of Defence to discuss the country’s most pressing security needs and how Canada can best continue to help.
