Petition to the House of Commons

WHEREAS:

  • The Canada's Minister of National Defence is mandated to protect Canada within its borders of land and sea;

  • The Minister of National Defence is NOT granted power to evoke wars upon other countries nor make treaties that encroach on the territories of other sovereign states; and

  • In contravention of defending our borders, the Canadian military does in fact invade other countries, being partner to the North Atlantic Treaty.

THEREFORE, we, the undersigned residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to immediately withdraw all connection, cooperation and material support from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Response by the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence

Signed by (Minister or Parliamentary Secretary): Marie-France Lalonde

Canada’s engagement in the world is guided by values of inclusion, compassion, accountable governance, and respect for diversity and human rights. As a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Canada has enduring obligations to contribute to continued security while preserving stability in the Euro-Atlantic region.

To this end, Canada will work to meet our NATO defence commitments as they evolve in response to shifts in the global security landscape. This includes playing an important role confronting Russian aggression through a steadfast commitment to NATO assurance and deterrence measures.

Our support to Euro-Atlantic security includes Canada’s role as the framework nation lead for NATO’s Forward Land Forces in Latvia under Operation REASSURANCE, the Canada-Ukraine Agreement on Security Cooperation and the $13.3 billion that Canada has committed in multifaceted assistance to support Ukraine, including our extensive military assistance to Ukraine under Operation UNIFIER.

Indeed, standing with our allies provides the best guarantee of our security and continued prosperity at home. That is why, together with the United States we will continue to defend NATO’s western flank, and with our Arctic allies we will defend NATO’s northern regions.

Ultimately, Canadians have always been ready to share the burden and responsibility of making the world a safer place. Canada has a long history of working collaboratively with partners to prevent and respond to conflicts and crises abroad, including support for peace and stabilization operations. The same applies to policy and advocacy that strengthen global norms on peace and security. Canada’s commitment to collective security is reflected in the long-standing support for core alliances, including NATO and the North American Aerospace Defence Command, and for the United Nations.
