Ottawa, September 27, 2022 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (the Committee) is now accepting applications for the 2022 Centennial Flame Research Award.

Since 1991, the award has been granted annually by the Committee to a Canadian with a disability, to conduct research and to prepare a report on the contributions of one or more persons with disabilities to the public life of Canada or the activities of Parliament.

The report of the award recipient will be presented to the Committee and will be included as part of the Committee’s report on the Centennial Flame Research Award Act, which is tabled in both Houses of Parliament.

For 2022, the amount awarded will be $6,700. Funding for the award is collected from the fountain of the Centennial Flame monument on Parliament Hill, where visitors regularly toss coins for good luck – as well as from monetary donations made to the Centennial Flame Research Award Fund.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• be a Canadian citizen;

• identify as a person with a disability.

How to apply

Applicants must submit the following information to the Clerk of the Committee by email or post:

1. A cover letter that:

• describes who they are and identifies their disability;

• indicates work experience and/or community involvement;

• explains why they deserve the award; and

• proposes their research subject and research methods (for example, they could address the ethical considerations that they took into account when conducting research on human subjects).

2. A letter of support for their application from a person of choice (and who is not the subject of the research).

3. Proof of Canadian citizenship.

Deadline

On Monday, September 26, 2022, the committee agreed that the deadline for applicants to ensure that all documents be submitted and postmarked on or before, be extended until Monday, October 31, 2022.
