Churence Rogers, Member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, presented an interim report today entitled Establishing a Canadian Transportation and Logistics Strategy: Part 2.

As part of this second part of the study on Canada's transportation and logistics strategy, the Committee focused on issues related to the efficiency of transportation corridors in eastern Canada. The Committee heard from 21 witnesses and received 3 briefs from stakeholders.

The report contains 14 recommendations addressed to the Government of Canada. For the Atlantic provinces in particular, the Committee recommended, among other things, accelerating the twinning of Route 185, completing Route 138 and considering the establishment of a fixed link between the island of Newfoundland and the mainland. In Quebec, the Committee recommended the modernization of transportation infrastructure on the North Shore and continued collaboration between the Government of Canada and stakeholders to promote the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes trade corridor internationally.

The testimony confirmed the importance for the Government of Canada to work collaboratively with stakeholders to improve the fluidity of Canada's supply chains and encourage initiatives that connect Canada from coast to coast" said the Honourable Judy A. Sgro, P.C., M.P., Chair of the Committee.

She concluded as follows: "I hope that this study will continue in the future and that the Committee will continue to explore opportunities to improve the efficiency of Canada's trade corridors to meet the future growth of Canada's trade with its trading partners.”
