HOUSE COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND ESTIMATES TABLES ITS REPORT ON THE CANADA POST CORPORATION

Ottawa, December 13, 2016 -

The Canada Post Corporation must make significant changes to honour its mandate and provide quality services that meet the needs of Canadians at a reasonable price and on a self-sustaining financial basis, according to the report of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates (the Committee) tabled today in the House of Commons by Tom Lukiwski, Chair of the Committee.

The Committee’s report, entitled The Way Forward for Canada Post, contains 45 recommendations, including that the Corporation should focus on the following five themes:

  • The alignment of the interests of management and Labour;
  • The update of the Canadian Postal Service Charter to meet the demands of the 21st century;
  • The modernization of Canada Post’s defined benefit pension plan;
  • The concentration on excellence on its core competencies and the generation of additional revenue in the digital markets; and
  • The preservation of the moratorium on community mailbox conversion and the reinstatement of home mail delivery services for communities that were converted to community mailboxes after 3 August 2015.

“I am very proud to present to Canadians the Committee’s work over the past few months on the future of Canada Post,” said Mr. Lukiwski. “On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank all Canadians who took the time to meet with us in Ottawa as well as in the 21 communities we visited throughout Canada over the course of the study and also those who responded to our online questionnaire. Their views and ideas were extremely important as they allowed Committee members to get a better understanding of Canadians’ needs and expectations towards Canada Post and ultimately helped in the formulation of our recommendations,” Mr. Lukiwski added.

The report is available online on the Committee’s website.
