APPENDIX C: CANADIAN ARMED FORCES PERSONNEL DEPLOYED ON PEACE OPERATIONS (1971-1990)

 

The figure provides, for the 1971 to 1990 period, the annual number of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel deployed worldwide on peace operations during the Cold War. It illustrates an increase in the number of personnel deployed on such operations from 625 in 1972 to 1,810 in 1973, and a decrease from 1,600 in 1979 to 750 in 1980. The number of CAF personnel deployed started to increase again in the mid-1980s, rising from 759 in 1985 to 897 in 1986. More than 1,000 CAF personnel were deployed annually on such operations by 1990. The peak year for such deployments during the 1971 to 1990 period was 1974, at 2,026; the lowest year was 1972, at 625. The note at the bottom of the figure provides the total number of CAF personnel who served on peace operations before 1971. In particular, approximately 59,388 CAF personnel participated in such operations between 1947 and 1970.

Note:      In 1981, the Department of National Defence reported that “between 1947 and 1981, approximately 74,000 Canadian servicemen and servicewomen participated in … peace restoring, peacekeeping and truce supervisory operations mounted by the United Nations and in … truce supervisory or observer missions conducted outside United Nations auspices.” Considering that about 14,612 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel were deployed on peace operations between 1971 and 1981, it can be deduced that approximately 59,388 CAF personnel served on peace operations between 1947 and 1970.
