NEWS RELEASE
Many Public Accounts Committee recommendations have been addressed
Ottawa, March 29, 2010 -
The Public Accounts Committee is actively following-up on the status of its recommendations and many have been addressed, according to a report of the Committee presented to the House of Commons today.
In a typical year, the Public Accounts Committee may present 15-20 reports to the House and subsequently receives responses from the Government. With so many reports, there is a real possibility that the Committee may move onto new subjects and not fully determine whether the issues raised in previous reports have been addressed. Consequently, the Committee decided to develop and implement a process to follow-up on its recommendations.
The Committee’s report on its follow-up process describes the elements of this process and presents an assessment of the status of recommendations made by the Committee in the 39th Parliament, 2nd Session. The recommendations are assessed as addressed, ongoing, status quo, not addressed, or rejected. The Committee determined that 63 percent of its recommendations have been addressed, 13 percent are ongoing, and 13 percent were rejected by the Government.
It is the Committee’s intention that this follow-up process will take place annually, as it helps to ensure that the Committee’s recommendations are taken seriously by the Government. It is part of a continuing dialogue with the Government that may lead to more effective Committee recommendations and clearer, more precise Government responses and subsequent actions to address the Committee’s and the Auditor General’s concerns.
