NEW: Cross-country hearings of the Subcommittee on Fiscal Imbalance of the Standing Committee on Finance
Ottawa, March 21, 2005 -
Today, the Subcommittee on Fiscal Imbalance of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance continued its public hearings in Regina, Saskatchewan. Witnesses included the Hon. Lorne Calvert, Premier of the Province of Saskatchewan and Mr. Brad Wall, Leader of the Official Opposition in the Saskatchewan Legislation Assembly. Also, Mr. Ian Peach from the Saskatchewan Institute of Public Policy will be making a presentation.
“We are still hearing witnesses but ultimately there is just one taxpayer,” said MP Yvan Loubier, Subcommittee Chair. “Taxpayers expect quality public services and want legislators to ensure that those services are provided, in accordance with their jurisdictions and with sufficient financial resources; this ensures that there will be no disputes between the various orders of government.”Cross-Canada public hearings will continue in Victoria on April 4, in Quebec City on April 11, in Winnipeg on April 18 and in Edmonton on May 2. Hearings will also be held in Ottawa. Public hearings were held in Halifax on February 18 and in Toronto on March 11. At the previous meetings, the Hon. Mitchell Murphy, Treasurer of the Province of Prince Edward Island, the Hon. Greg Sorbara, Minister of Finance of the Province of Ontario, Mr. John Tory, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and Mr. Michael Prue, Finance Critic of the New Democratic Party of Ontario made presentations to the Subcommittee.
