NEWS RELEASE
Public hearings
Ottawa, February 18, 2005 -
Today, the Subcommittee on Fiscal Imbalance of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance launched cross-country hearings with meetings in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Appearing before the Subcommittee were representatives of the Government of Prince Edward Island, the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council and the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies.
“The witnesses who appeared before us certainly presented a variety of views on the existence, nature and extent of a fiscal imbalance to clear evidence that federal transfers are critical sources of revenues for provincial governments in Atlantic Canada”, said Yvan Loubier, M.P., Chair of the Subcommittee.
“We must always bear in mind that there is only one tax payer, although more than one level of government has constitutional responsibility for the delivery of public services. Provincial / Territorial Governments must be able to deliver high-quality public services within their area of responsibility without having to levy excessively high provincial / territorial tax rises”.
