Meeting No. 32

Tuesday, May 16, 2000

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Serge Cardin, David Chatters, Tony Ianno, Carolyn Parrish, Carmen Provenzano, Julian Reed, Brent St. Denis and Joseph Volpe.

Acting Members present: Michelle Dockrill for Yvon Godin; Gerald Keddy for Gilles Bernier; Darrell Stinson for Werner Schmidt; Peter Mancini for Yvon Godin.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Natural Resources: Ralph Goodale, Minister of Natural Resources.

Witnesses: From the Department of Natural Resources: Linda Keen, Assistant Deputy Minister, Minerals & Metals Sector; Robert Lomas, Senior Commodity Specialist, Minerals & Metals Sector; Norman Bayne, Senior Counsel, Legal Services. From the Cape Breton Development Corporation: Joe Shannon, Chairman of the Board; Merrill Buchanan, Acting President.

The Order of Reference dated Monday, May 8, 2000, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-11, An Act to authorize the divestiture of the assets of, and to dissolve, the Cape Breton Development Corporation, to amend the Cape Breton Development Corporation Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations.

In accordance with Standing Order 75(1), Clause 1 was postponed.

The Chair called Clause 2.

The Minister made a statement and with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:47 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:48 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Joe Shannon made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:26 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
