MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 121

Thursday, May 6, 1999

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Francine Lalonde, Ian Murray; Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Lorne Nystrom for Chris Axworthy; Chuck Strahl for Rahim Jaffer; Roy Cullen for Stan Keyes; Denis Coderre for Walt Lastewka; Ivan Grose for Janko Peric; John McKay for Alex Shepherd

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Nathalie Poitrier, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From Statistics Canada: Dr. Ivan P. Fellegi, Chief Statistician of Canada; Bruce Petrie, Assistant Chief Statistician, Social, Institutions and Labour Statistics; Ray Ryan, Assistant Chief Statistician, Business and Trade Statistics; Stewart Wells, Assistant Chief Statistician, National Accounts and Analytical Studies. From Industry Canada: Howard R. Wilson, Ethics Counsellor.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House dated March 1st, 1999, the Committee continued its examination of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000, INDUSTRY, Votes 1, 5, L10, L15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115 and 120.

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Vote 110 under INDUSTRY.

Dr. Ivan Fellegi made an opening statement and with the witnesses, answered questions.

Vote 110 was allowed to stand.

At 4:40 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:44 p.m., the sitting resumed.

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Votes 1, 5, L10 and L15 under INDUSTRY.

Howard Wilson made an opening statement and answered questions.

Votes 1, 5, L10 and L15 were allowed to stand.

On motion of Ian Murray, it was agreed, - That the Main Estimates under INDUSTRY, Votes 1, 5, L10, L15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 115 and 120 for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000 be concurred in.

On motion of Ian Murray, it was agreed, - That the Chair be instructed to report to the House of Commons the Main Estimates under INDUSTRY, Votes 1, 5, L10, L15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115 and 120 for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000 to the House of Commons at the earliest convenience. 

At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
