MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 47

TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 10:06 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 209 of the West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Raymonde Folco, Bill Graham, Gurmant Grewal, Ted McWhinney, Bob Mills, Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Union of Burma: Dr. Sein Win, Prime Minister of the National Coalition of the Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB); Dr. Thaun Tung, Director, NCGUB United Nations Liaison Office; Harn Yawnghwe, Euro-Burma Office (Brussels); David Tackarbaw, Information Centre of Karen National Union; Kevin Heppner, Director, Karen Human Rights Group; Sui Khar, Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Chin National Front. From Friends of Burma: Christine Harmstone, Coordinator. From the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development : Micheline Lévesque.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to examine the situation in the Union of Burma.

Micheline Lévesque, Dr. Sein Win and Christine Harmstone each made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:02 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
