Meeting No. 28

 

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1998

 

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in a televised session at 3:19 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 253-D of the Centre Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Bill Graham, Bob Mills, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

 

Acting Members present: Keith Martin for Gurmant Grewal.

 

Other Members present: Derek Lee.

 

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee and Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

 

Witnesses: From the Laogai Research Foundation: Wei Jingsheng. From the Federation for a Democratic China: Michael To.

 

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to discuss human rights in China and Canada-China relations.

 

Michael To and Wei Jingsheng each made an opening statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:34 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
