The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dave Batters, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Ruby Dhalla, Steven John Fletcher, Christiane Gagnon, Tina Keeper, Rob Merrifield and Penny Priddy.

 

Acting Members present: James Lunney for Rick Dykstra.

 

Other Members present: Pat Martin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Odette Madore, Analyst; Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Michael D. Chong, Minister for Sport.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Jacques Paquette, Associate Deputy Minister, International and Intergovernmental Affairs and Sports; Tom Scrimger, Director General, Sport Canada. The Silken Laumann Active Kids Movement: Silken Laumann, President; Sandra Hamilton, Director of Marketing and Corporate Relations. Aboriginal Sport Circle: Rod Jacobs, Manager, Aboriginal Sport Development; Stephanie Smith, Interim Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Childhood Obesity.
 

The Minister, Silken Laumann and Rod Jacobs made statements and, with Jacques Paquette, answered questions.

 

At 5:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:14 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

On motion of Patricia Davidson, it was agreed, — That the Committee undertake four additional meetings with witnesses, in addition to the current workplan, as part of its study on Childhood Obesity, and that during one of these final four meetings the Committee hear testimony from Health Canada officials on the new version of Canada's Food Guide.

 

On motion of Christiane Gagnon, it was agreed, — That the Committee invite Health Canada officials to appear concerning the new version of the Canadian Food Guide, at one of the four additional meetings on Childhood Obesity.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 17, 2006, the Committee commenced its study on Funding of the First Nations and Inuit Tobacco Control Strategy.
 

Tina Keeper moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee recommends that the government continue funding the First Nations and Inuit Tobacco Control Strategy at the fiscal 2005-2006 level and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion to the House forthwith.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 4.

 

At 5:51 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
