TROISIÈME RAPPORT

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), your Committee has considered the issue of the situation in Afghanistan and has agreed to report the following:

Conformément au mandat que lui confère le paragraphe 108(2) du Règlement, votre Comité a examiné la question de la situation aux Afghanistan et a convenu de rapporter ce qui suit  :

Deeply disturbed by the May 22, 2001 edict by the Taliban of Afghanistan forcing its Hindu population to wear religious symbols denoting their faith;

Profondément perturbé par l’édit rendu par les Talibans le 22 mai 2001 pour obliger la population hindoue à porter un symbole distinctif dénotant sa confession religieuse;

Recognizing that the Taliban continue to abuse the basic human rights of the Afghan citizens, in particular those of women and children;

Conscient que les Talibans continuent de bafouer les droits humains fondamentaux des citoyens afghans, en particulier ceux des femmes et des enfants;

Re-affirming the importance of religious freedom as a basic human right; and

Réaffirmant l’importance de la liberté religieuse au nombre des droits humains fondamentaux; et

Recognizing the Government of Canada's ongoing work in this area;

Reconnaissant les efforts constants déployés par le gouvernement du Canada dans ce domaine;

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade condemns the recent actions of the Taliban in Afghanistan and recommends that the Government of Canada actively co-sponsor resolutions within the United Nations system which advocate the promotion and protection of religious freedom and respect of international humanitarian law in Afghanistan.

Le Comité des affaires étrangères et du commerce international condamne les récents agissements des Talibans en Afghanistan et recommande que le gouvernement du Canada co-parraine activement les résolutions présentées aux Nations Unies en faveur de la promotion et de la protection de la liberté religieuse et du respect du droit international humanitaire en Afghanistan.
