Motions

Ms. Crowder (Nanaimo—Cowichan), seconded by Ms. Davies (Vancouver East), moved, — That it be an instruction to the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, that it have the power during its consideration of Bill C-3, An Act to promote gender equity in Indian registration by responding to the Court of Appeal for British Columbia decision in McIvor v. Canada (Registrar of Indian and Northern Affairs), to expand the scope of the Bill so that a grandchild born before 1985 with a female grandparent would receive the same entitlement to status as a grandchild of a male grandparent born in the same period.

Debate arose thereon.

Mr. Payne (Medicine Hat), seconded by Mr. Cannan (Kelowna—Lake Country), moved, — That the debate be now adjourned.

The House resumed consideration of the motion of Mr. Kenney (Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism), seconded by Mr. Lunn (Minister of State (Sport)), — That Bill C-11, An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Federal Courts Act, be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration.

Private Members' Business

At 5:30 p.m., pursuant to Standing Order 30(6), the House proceeded to the consideration of Private Members' Business.

The House resumed consideration of the motion of Mr. Paillé (Louis-Hébert), seconded by Mr. Pomerleau (Drummond), — That, in the opinion of the House, the government should purchase the Pont de Québec for one dollar and commit to quickly finishing the repair work so as to respect its importance as a historical monument and vital transportation link for the Quebec City region. (Private Members' Business M-423)

The debate continued.

Mrs. Mendes (Brossard—La Prairie), seconded by Mr. Savage (Dartmouth—Cole Harbour), moved the following amendment, — That the motion be amended by substitution of the word “and” after the word “dollar” by a comma and by adding after the words “Quebec City region”, the following:

“and should enter into discussion with the CN regarding the responsibility for the cost of maintenance and repair”.

Debate arose thereon.

The question was put on the amendment and it was agreed to on division.

Pursuant to Standing Order 93(1), the House proceeded to the putting of the question on the main motion, as amended, of Mr. Paillé (Louis-Hébert), seconded by Mr. Pomerleau (Drummond), — That, in the opinion of the House, the government should purchase the Pont de Québec for one dollar, commit to quickly finishing the repair work so as to respect its importance as a historical monument and vital transportation link for the Quebec City region and should enter into discussion with the CN regarding the responsibility for the cost of maintenance and repair. (Private Members' Business M-423)

The question was put on the main motion, as amended, and, pursuant to Standing Order 93(1), the recorded division was deferred until Wednesday, April 28, 2010, immediately before the time provided for Private Members' Business.
