Committee to discuss Canada’s trade and foreign policy with U.S. and Mexican officials

Ottawa, October 23, 2017 -

Today, members from the three official parties of Canada’s House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development will begin a week-long trip to Mexico and the United States.

The mission is a continuation of the Committee’s ongoing study of the United States, North American trilateralism, and Canadian foreign policy. During its mission to Mexico City, members will meet with legislators from the Mexican Senate and Chamber of Deputies to discuss trade and foreign policy. While in New York City, the Committee will visit the United Nations to hear from UN agencies and officials on global issues, including disarmament policy. The Committee’s mission will conclude in Washington, D.C., where members will meet with Senators and Representatives from the United States Congress. The Committee will also meet with officials from the Organization of American States, as well as public policy experts on trade and international security.

The Committee will look at how the policies and perspectives of the U.S. administration are affecting Canada’s bilateral relationship with the United States, as well as its foreign policy interests around the world. The study is also examining Canada–Mexico bilateral relations within the context of broader North American trilateral cooperation. Since the Committee’s hearings began in the spring, it has held six meetings with witnesses.

The Committee’s mission will enable members to foster relationships with officials in Mexico and the United States. It will also allow the Committee to engage with key stakeholders regarding Canada’s political and economic objectives and interests in North America.
