The Standing Committee on National Defence met in a televised session at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, Rick Norlock, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Corneliu Chisu, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Jean-François Larose, Élaine Michaud, Rick Norlock and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Chungsen Leung for Hon. Peter Kent, Larry Miller for James Bezan and Hon. Judy Sgro for Joyce Murray.

 

Associate Members present: Ted Falk.

 

Other Members present: Craig Scott.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Martin Auger, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: Gen Thomas J. Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff; RAdm Jennifer Bennett, Champion for Women in Defence; MGen Blaise Cathcart, Judge Advocate General; MGen David Millar, Chief of Military Personnel; Col Robert P. Delaney, Canadian Forces Provost Marshal.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, April 29, 2014, the Committee commenced its study of sexual assault in the military.
 

Gen Thomas J. Lawson made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:10 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 

Jack Harris moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on National Defence undertake a study of sexual assault and harassment in the Canadian Armed Forces as soon as possible, and that the Committee report its findings to the House.

 

At 12:54 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:56 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
