The Special Committee on Violence Against Indigenous Women met at 6:03 p.m. this day, in Room 228, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Stella Ambler, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Kelly Block, Lois Brown, Jean Crowder, Bob Dechert, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Romeo Saganash and Susan Truppe.

 

Acting Members present: Dan Albas for Mark Strahl, Dennis Bevington for Niki Ashton and Hon. Judy Sgro for Hon. Carolyn Bennett.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Julie Cool, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Native Women's Association of Canada: Michèle Audette, President. Hollow Water First Nation: Burma Bushie, Co-Founder, Community Holistic Circle Healing; Robyn Hall, Co-Director, Community Holistic Circle Healing.

 

At 6:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:02 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, which read as follows, be concurred in:

Your Subcommittee met on Thursday, November 7, 2013, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

7:00 – 8:00 PM: 2 organizations (max of 4 people)

That each time that 2 organizations are invited to testify at a meeting, one will be selected by the governing party while the other will be selected by the opposition.

 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $ 77,100, for the study of violence against indigenous women be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That a maximum of 15 family members be invited for the Committee's meeting of December 9, 2013.

 

At 6:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:12 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Monday, October 21, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of violence against indigenous women.
 

Michelle Audette made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 7:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:09 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Burma Bushie and Robyn Hall made statements and answered questions.

 

At 7:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
