The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room C-120, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, Ben Lobb, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Eve Adams, Libby Davies, Earl Dreeshen, Hon. Hedy Fry, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Dany Morin, Isabelle Morin and David Wilks.

 

Acting Members present: Jinny Jogindera Sims for Wayne Marston.

 

Associate Members present: Susan Truppe.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Melissa Pang, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Nurses Association: Rachel Bard, Chief Executive Officer; Josette Roussel, Senior Nurse Advisor, Professional Practice. Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada: Jessica Ma, Project Lead; Donna Walsh, Educator. College of Family Physicians of Canada: Jamie Meuser, Associate Executive Director. Canadian Medical Association: Maura Ricketts, Director, Policy and Research; Chris Simpson, President-Elect.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of the Government's role in addressing prescription drug abuse.
 

Jamie Meuser, Rachel Bard, Chris Sampson and Jessica Ma made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:15 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:17 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 29 400, for the study of the Government's role in addressing prescription drug abuse, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair write to Member of Parliament Dean Allison regarding his letter of November 6, 2013, on anaphylaxis to thank him and inform him that this suggested study topic may be considered at a later date once the Committee’s current priorities have been addressed.

 

It was agreed, — That the draft workplan for the study on the Government’s role in addressing prescription drug abuse be distributed to Committee members once it has been updated.

 

It was agreed, — That time be set aside at the meeting of either Monday, December 9, 2013, or Wednesday, December 11, 2013, in order to give the analysts instructions regarding the draft report on the study on the Government’s role in addressing prescription drug abuse.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
