The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Vice-Chair, Robert Chisholm, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Robert Chisholm, Ryan Cleary, Patricia Davidson, Randy Kamp, François Lapointe, Ryan Leef, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Robert Sopuck, John Weston and Rodney Weston.

 

Associate Members present: Greg Kerr.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Thai Nguyen, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: David Gillis, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector; Jean Landry, Acting Director General, Ecosystem Science Directorate, Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector; Pierre Pepin, Biomathematician, Science Branch, Newfoundland and Labrador Region. Torngat Joint Fisheries Board: Jamie Snook, Executive Director; Aaron Dale, Policy Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, the Committee commenced its study on the changing ocean conditions or other factors off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador that have led to stock fluctuations in northern shrimp and other species.
 

David Gillis with Pierre Pepin made a statement and, with Jean Landry, answered questions.

 

At 4:21 p.m., Rodney Weston took the Chair.

 

At 4:42 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:49 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee be authorized to distribute a map provided by Torngat Joint Fisheries Board in the language received, ensuring that the document be translated and distributed as promptly as possible.

 

Jamie Snook made a statement and, with Aaron Dale, answered questions.

 

On motion of Patricia Davidson, it was agreed, — That the proposed operational budget in the amount of $23,200, in relation to its study on the changing ocean conditions or other factors off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador that have led to stock fluctuations in northern shrimp and other species, be adopted.

 

At 5:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
