The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 228, The Valour Building, the Chair, Gordon Brown, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gordon Brown, Rick Dykstra, Jim Hillyer, Irene Mathyssen, Pierre Nantel, Kennedy Stewart, John Weston, Terence Young and David Yurdiga.

 

Acting Members present: Ted Hsu for Hon. Stéphane Dion.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: David-Andrés Novoa, Legislative Clerk. Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Hon. Nancy Greene Raine, Senator. Sport Matters Group: Robert Elliott, Senior Leader. Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities: Landon French, Executive Director. Physical and Health Education Canada: Chris Jones, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer. Trans Canada Trail: Paul LaBarge, Chair.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, October 29, 2014, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill S-211, An Act to establish a national day to promote health and fitness for all Canadians.
 

Robert Elliott, Chris Jones and Hon. Nancy Green Raine made statements and answered questions.

At 4:26 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Paul LaBarge and Landon French made statements and answered questions.

At 5:17 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:18 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The Committee commenced its clause-by-clause study of the Bill.

 

Pursuant to Standing Order 75(1), consideration of the Preamble and Clause 1, Short Title, were postponed.

The Chair called Clause 2.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Pierre Nantel moved, — That the Committee undertake a study on the effects of the budget cuts to CBC/Radio-Canada’s social, cultural, heritage and real estate assets, and those related to the production of Canadian content, and that this televised study concludes before March 31st 2015, and that the Committee produce satisfactory recommendations.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:YEAS: Ted Hsu, Irene Mathyssen, Pierre Nantel, Kennedy Stewart — 4; NAYS: Rick Dykstra, Jim Hillyer, John Weston, Terence Young, David Yurdiga — 5.
