The Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs met in camera at 9:35 a.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Royal Galipeau, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvain Chicoine, Corneliu Chisu, Royal Galipeau, Parm Gill, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Bryan Hayes, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, John Rafferty and Peter Stoffer.

 

Acting Members present: Sean Casey for Hon. Jim Karygiannis and José Nunez-Melo for Manon Perreault.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to Orders of Reference from the House respecting Bills,

(a) the Clerk of the Committee shall, upon the Committee receiving such an Order of Reference, write to each Member who is not a member of a caucus represented on the Committee to invite those Members to file, in a letter to the Chair of the Committee, in both official languages, any amendments to the Bill, which is the subject of the said Order, which they would suggest that the Committee consider;

(b) suggested amendments filed, pursuant to paragraph (a), at least 48 hours prior to the start of clause-by-clause consideration of the Bill to which the amendments relate shall be deemed to be proposed during the said consideration, provided that the Committee may, by motion, vary this deadline in respect of a given Bill; and

(c) during the clause-by-clause consideration of a Bill, the Chair shall allow a Member who filed suggested amendments, pursuant to paragraph (a), an opportunity to make brief representations in support of them.

 

It was agreed, — That, in an effort to educate new members and existing members of our Committee on how our government has made substantial investment totalling almost $5 billion new dollars since 2006, the Committee invite officials from the Department of Veterans Affairs to appear on November 7, 2013. During this meeting, members will be able to question officials on each and every facet of the Veterans Affairs $2.6 billion of programs, benefits and services which the ombudsman himself noted as significant.

 

At 9:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
