The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 1:05 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Harold Albrecht, Hon. Irwin Cotler, Nina Grewal, Pierre Jacob, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Erin Shaw, Analyst; Charlotte Landry, Research Assistant.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hold hearings on freedom of religion in Indonesia.

 

It was agreed, — Whereas, two prominent lawyers and human rights defenders, Antonio Trejo-Cabrera and Manuel Díaz-Mazariegos, have been assassinated in Honduras in recent days;

Whereas, in Honduras 76 lawyers have been murdered over the past three years;

Whereas, more than 60 people have been killed in land disputes over the past two years;

That the Subcommittee study the deteriorating human rights situation in Honduras.

 

It was agreed, — That all Subcommittee meetings be televised unless otherwise agreed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair send a letter to the Minister of Public Safety on behalf of the Subcommittee encouraging him to analyze the decision by the Secretary of State for External Affairs of the United States, to remove the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) from the United States list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

 

At 1:56 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
