The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in camera at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, David Sweet, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Peter Braid, John Carmichael, Cheryl Gallant, Peter Julian, Mike Lake, Hélène LeBlanc, Brian Masse, Phil McColeman, Hon. Geoff Regan, Lee Richardson, David Sweet and Glenn Thibeault.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mathieu Frigon, Analyst; Dillan Theckedath, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite Industry Canada officials for one meeting to provide an overview of the Department.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study of E-Commerce to examine:

- the current level of adoption of E-commerce by businesses and consumers in Canada;

- best practices of industry leaders in E-Commerce, both in Canada and worldwide;

- ways to increase E-Commerce adoption by both small and medium-sized businesses and large corporations in Canada;

- the role of universities, colleges and polytechnics in the development of E-Commerce;

- red tape relating to E-Commerce which creates barriers to innovation, growth and commercialization;

- future possibilities and emerging technology in the field of E-Commerce; and

- the emerging mobile payment market and the impacts that these new payment methods have on businesses and consumers in Canada.

 

At 3:54 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:00 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee examine the challenges facing Canadian industry and examine the ways that Canadian industry can enhance innovation, build robust job creation, increase productivity and competitiveness and that the Committee report back to the House.

 

At 4:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
