Meeting No. 60

Thursday, October 25, 2012

The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:39 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Matthew Kellway, Ben Lobb, Dany Morin, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

Acting Members present: Anne-Marie Day for Libby Davies, Rick Dykstra for Wladyslaw Lizon, Pierre Jacob for Djaouida Sellah and Kellie Leitch for Wladyslaw Lizon.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst ; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

Witnesses: University Health Network: Peter Rossos, Chief Medical Information Officer. Ontario Telemedicine Network: Ed Brown, Chief Executive Officer. University of British Columbia: Kendall Ho, Director and Professor, eHealth Strategy Office, Faculty of Medicine. Ottawa Hospital: Glen Geiger, Chief Medical Information Officer. Canada Health Infoway: Richard Alvarez, President and Chief Executive Officer; Mike Sheridan, Chief Operating Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 9, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of technological innovation.

Hedy Fry moved, — That the committee undertake a study on the subject matter of Part 4 Division 13 of Bill C-45, A second Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on March 29, 2012 and other measures, and report its findings to the House of Commons no later than Monday, November 5, 2012.

Debate arose thereon.

It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned and be resumed in camera, immediately after the hearing of witnesses.

Peter Rossos and Ed Brown, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, Kendall Ho, by videoconference from Vancouver, British Colombia, Glen Geiger and Richard Alvarez, made statements and, with Mike Sheridan, answered questions.

At 12:46 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:47 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 6, 2012 in Ottawa be cancelled.

At 12:52 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
