The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Malcolm Allen, Alex Atamanenko, Pierre Lemieux, Ben Lobb, Larry Miller, LaVar Payne, Francine Raynault, Jean Rousseau, Brian Storseth, Frank Valeriote and Bob Zimmer.

 

Acting Members present: Stephen Woodworth for Randy Hoback.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Khamla Heminthavong, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute: David McInnes, President and Chief Executive Officer. Conference Board of Canada: Michael Burt, Director, Industrial Economic Trends. George Morris Centre: Robert Seguin, Excutive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motions adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 13, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of the food supply chain (overview of the subject).
 

Robert Seguin by videoconference from Guelph, Ontario, David McInnes and Michael Burt made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:13 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Third Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, which read as follows, be concurred in as amended:

 

Your Subcommittee met on Monday, March 26, 2012, to consider business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

 

1. That, in relation to its study of the Food Supply Chain (Overview), the Committee hold two (2) additional meetings on Monday, April 2 and Wednesday, April 4, 2012;

 

2. That, in relation to its study of Growing Forward 2, the Committee meetings of Monday, April 23 and Wednesday, April 25, 2012, be devoted to the consideration of a draft report;

 

3. That, at the conclusion of its study the Food Supply Chain (Overview), the committee undertake a study of the Animal Products Supply Chain which would be divided into a number of components, the first one being red meat, and that it devote (5) five meetings to this component; and

 

4. That, in relation to its study of the Animal Products Supply Chain, the Committee travel to Guelph, Ontario, on Monday, May 28, 2012 to conduct site visits at Cargill’s meat processing plant and at the University of Guelph – Barcode of Life initiative.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to its study of the Animal Products Supply Chain, the proposed budget in the amount of $19,471.80, for the Committee’s travel to Guelph, Ontario, on Monday, May 28, 2012, be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

 

At 5:22 p.m., by unanimous consent and pursuant to Standing Order 115(5), it was agreed that the Committee continue to sit.

 

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
