The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Chris Warkentin, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Dennis Bevington, Ray Boughen, Rob Clarke, Linda Duncan, Jonathan Genest-Jourdain, LaVar Payne, John Rafferty, Greg Rickford, Kyle Seeback, Chris Warkentin and David Wilks.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger for Hon. Carolyn Bennett.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Janine Dunlop, Director, Negotiations Directorate, Specific Claims Branch; Anik Dupont, Director General, Specific Claims Branch; Kathy Green, Director, Research and Policy Directorate, Specific Claims Branch. Department of Justice: Kevin McNeil, Senior Counsel, Specific Claims Section.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the 1st Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on Thursday, September 29, 2011, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. That on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, the Committee receive a briefing from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada on Specific Land Claims.

2. That on Thursday, October 6, 2011, the Committee receive a briefing from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada on Land Management Requirements.

3. That on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, the Committee meet with leaders of National Aboriginal Organizations.

4. That on Thursday, October 20, 2011, the Committee receive a briefing from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada on Treaty process.

5.That on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, the Committee meet with the BC Treaty Commission.

 

It was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

At 11:13 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:15 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing on Specific Land Claims.
 

Anik Dupont made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:25 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:28 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with Chief Robert Louie on Thursday, October 20, 2011.

 

At 12:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
