The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in camera at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Dona Cadman, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Anita Neville and Michelle Simson.

 

Acting Members present: Russ Hiebert for Cathy McLeod and Tilly O'Neill-Gordon for Lois Brown.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That three (3) additional meetings be devoted to hear witnesses in relation to the study of violence against Aboriginal women.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the Committee’s study of violence against Aboriginal women, the analysts prepare a summary of testimony as an interim report, to be presented to the Committee, before March 22, 2011.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee summon Jamieson Weetman, David Angell, Elissa Goldberg, Jim Nickel and Gwyn Kutz from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to appear before the Committee on March 3, 2011, to discuss language changes at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee summon Ross O’Connor, former Foreign Affairs Policy Advisor in the Prime Minister’s Office, to appear before the Committee on March 1, 2011, to discuss language changes at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee reiterate its invitation to the Minister of Foreign Affairs to appear to discuss language changes to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of the cancellation of the mandatory long form census and its impact on women's equality in Canada.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 12:37 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:40 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee condemn the stoning of young women and men in Afghanistan and call on the government to take the necessary action to put an end to these stonings as soon as possible; and that the motion be reported to the House of Commons.

 

At 12:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
