The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 8:48 a.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Vice-Chair, Cathy McLeod, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Lois Brown, Dona Cadman, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Hon. Anita Neville and Michelle Simson.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Judy Sgro for Hon. Hedy Fry.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Aideen Nabigon, Director General, Settlement Agreement Policy and Partnerships; Alia Butt, Director, Policy and Reconciliation. Department of Health: Kathy Langlois, Director General, Community Programs Directorate, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch; Eric Costen, Director, Mental Health and Addictions, Community Programs Directorate, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 8, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of violence against Aboriginal women.
 

Aideen Nabigon and Kathy Langlois made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:21 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:22 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

By unanimous consent, on motion of Anita Neville, it was agreed, — That the Committee recommend that the government ensure that the benchmarks currently being developed for any future training mission in Afghanistan are compliant with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security; and that this motion be reported to House.

 

At 10:25 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:26 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee give the following title to its study of new technologies: "The impact of social media and new communications technologies on violence against women and girls".

 

At 10:38 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
