The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in a televised session at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Dean Allison, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, Francine Lalonde, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Glen Douglas Pearson, Hon. Bob Rae and Dave Van Kesteren.

 

Acting Members present: Lois Brown for Deepak Obhrai.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Andrew Lauzon, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Allison Goody, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Suzanne R. Trépanier; Payam Akhavan, Professor of International Law at McGill University, and Former Member of the Board of Directors at Rights & Democracy; Hon. Ed Broadbent, Former Member of Parliament and Former President of Rights & Democracy (1990-1996); Hon. Warren Allmand, Former Member of Parliament and Former President of Rights & Democracy (1997-2002).

 

Participants present: As an individual: Deborah Mankovitz, Counsel to Suzanne R. Trépanier.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of the situation at Rights & Democracy (International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development).
 

Suzanne R. Trépanier and Payam Akhavan made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:12 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:15 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The Hon. Ed Broadbent and the Hon. Warren Allmand made statements and answered questions.

 

At 1:11 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
