The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Dean Allison, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, Francine Lalonde, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Glen Douglas Pearson, Hon. Bob Rae and Dave Van Kesteren.

 

Acting Members present: John Rafferty for Paul Dewar.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Andrew Lauzon, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Allison Goody, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian International Development Agency: Margaret Biggs, President; Diane Jacovella, Vice President, Multilateral and Global Programs Branch. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Ron Garson, Director, Summit Policy Division (G8/G20) . United Nations: Francis Deng, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, Department of Political Affairs; Kelly Whitty, Outreach Officer, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, Department of Political Affairs.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, April 22, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of the Group of Eight (G8) Summit with a focus on the Maternal and Child Health Initiative.
 

Margaret Biggs made a statement and, with Diane Jacovella and Ron Garson, answered questions.

 

At 11:58 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:03 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee met with the United Nations Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide.
 

Francis Deng made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:41 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
