The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met in camera at 4:33 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, Paul Calandra, Olivia Chow, Hon. Denis Coderre, Rick Dykstra, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Thierry St-Cyr, Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac, David Tilson, Alice Wong and Terence Young.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Elgersma, Analyst; Daphne Keevil Harrold, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 4:50 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:52 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Third Report of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, which read as follows, be adopted:

In accordance with its mandate pursuant to Order made March 3, 2010, your Subcommittee has considered the question of the future business of the Committee.

The Subcommittee recommends the following to the Committee:

That the Committee adopt the operational budget of $25,450 for its study of immigration application process wait times;

That the Committee adopt the budget of $148,769 for the travel of five members to Nairobi, Kenya, New Delhi, India, and Hong Kong, China, as part of its study of immigration application process wait times;

That the evidence and documentation received by the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration during the second session of the 40th Parliament in relation to its study of immigration application wait times be taken into consideration by the Committee in this session;

That, on Tuesday, April 27, the Committee hear stakeholders concerning the Department of Citizenship and Immigration’s role in the Government of Canada's response to the earthquake in Haiti; and

That, on Thursday, April 29, the Committee hear representatives of foreign governments as part of its study of immigration application process wait times..

 

At 5:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:08 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Olivia Chow moved, — That, upon completion of the wait times studies, the Committee study the issue of visitor visas, providing that, if Bill C-11, An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Federal Courts Act, be referred to the Committee, study of the latter take precedence.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived.

 

At 5:13 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
