The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, David Anderson, Hon. Navdeep Bains, Leon Benoit, France Bonsant, Paule Brunelle, Nathan Cullen, Russ Hiebert, Hon. Geoff Regan, Devinder Shory and Alan Tonks.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Bradley R. Trost.

 

Other Members present: David J. McGuinty.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst; Mohamed Zakzouk, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission: Michael M. Binder, President; Patsy Thompson, Director General, Directorate of Environmental and Radiation Protection and Assessment. Canadian Nuclear Association: Murray Elston, President and Chief Executive Officer. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited: Hugh MacDiarmid, President and Chief Executive Officer; Michael Ingram, Senior Vice-President, Operations; Bill Pilkington, Senior Vice-President and Chief Nuclear Officer.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2009, the Committee commenced its study on the activities of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) at Chalk River.
 

Michael M. Binder made a statement and, with Patsy Thompson, answered questions.

 

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:36 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Hugh MacDiarmid and Murray Elston made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
