The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in camera at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 213, Wellington Building, the Vice-Chair, Lise Zarac, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, Royal Galipeau, Shelly Glover, Yvon Godin, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Lise Zarac.

 

Acting Members present: Lois Brown for Steven Blaney and Roger Gaudet for Monique Guay.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst; Julian Walker, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 9:58 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:15 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Commissioner of Official Languages for an update on the Office's activities and a discussion on the main issues concerning official languages.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, if possible a week after meeting with the Commissioner of Official Languages.

 

It was agreed, — That the meetings with the Commissioner and the Minister be televised if possible.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee begin a study on the federal government's support for post-secondary institutions and their efforts in promoting bilingualism in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee analysts prepare a work plan for future Committee business, taking in consideration the Members' suggestions, to be discussed at the Committee's next meeting.

 

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
