The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 9:11 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, Royal Galipeau, Yvon Godin, Monique Guay, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Lise Zarac.

 

Acting Members present: Tilly O'Neill-Gordon for Shelly Glover.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Ghislaine Charlebois, Assistant Commissioner, Compliance Assurance Branch; Graham Fraser, Commissioner; Carsten Quell, Director, Policy and Research; Johane Tremblay, Acting Assistant Commissioner, Policy and Communications Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the broadcasting and services in French of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.
 

Graham Fraser made a statement and, with Johane Tremblay and Carsten Quell, answered questions.

 

At 10:18 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:22 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $15,000, for the study of the broadcasting and services in French of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee send a letter asking the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) to include linguistic provisions in their agreements with future sponsors, and strongly suggest to current and future sponsors the use of Canada’s both official languages in their publicity activities.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee send a letter to Tourism British Columbia to express its dissatisfaction to the fact that their 2010 Olympic Games web page is not available in French, and to strongly suggest including the French version of this page on their web site, in preparation for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee begin a study of the Offical Languages Program Transformation Model of the Canadian Forces.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee formally invite the University of Toronto, the University of New Brunswick, the University of British Columbia and the University of Calgary for its study on the federal government's support for post-secondary institutions and their efforts in promoting bilingualism in Canada.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
